VfL Gummersbach is trying to win the SCHLECKER CUP for the fourth time after 1988, 1990 and 2003. Head coach Alfred Gislason has once come to Ehingen with his former team SC Magdeburg in 2002. By qualifying once more for the EHF Champions League, VfL Gummersbach has reached their goals of the past season. Next season all home matches will take place at the Cologne Arena, which can host 19,250 spectators maximum.

Some players such as Geoffroy Krantz know the tournament by playing there with their former team. Recently the club has signed its key players Momir Ilic , Vedran Zrnic and Goran Stojanovic until 2010. Also irreplacable for the team is the topscorer of the handball world cup 2007, Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson.
